Entering a nursing home is not always by choice.

Entering a nursing home is not always by choice.

I don't want to tell you anything, but no-one likes staying in hospital or in a nursing home. Whether it's for the short term or the long term. So what about an indefinite stay? The question is clearly asked. Even if we refuse, we will one day be faced with this reality. For ourselves or someone close to us.

So what does this mean? What food for thought do we have?

From the outset, admission to an MRM (nursing home) is not a matter of choice, but follows an illness, an accident (a fall), a stroke, etc. 64% of admissions to an MRM are related to these problems, such is the immediate urgency of finding a solution.

Admission to the MRM can also be the secondary cause of a family tragedy, with the death of a spouse causing psychological or physical deterioration for the remaining parent. It should be noted that 3 out of 4 residents are divorced, separated or even widowed.

Finally, the aftermath of hospitalisation requires medical care that cannot be provided at home. Even so, this last option will always be preferred to any other.

The decision to enter an MRM can be fuelled by other key factors.

Reversing loneliness and isolation at home. Living in an MRM offers residents a new social life. Over 70% of residents spontaneously declare that they have friends among the other residents. The activities on offer are also a big hit with residents. It's like an absolute desire to maintain social links and communication with others.

Some residents recognise that the MRM is a choice. A choice for security. Security for themselves, but also for their family and friends. It's true that the MRM offers a 24/7 assistance service, which means that in the event of a fall or feeling unwell, help will be provided immediately. What a relief it is for the family to know that their elderly loved one is safe. Sometimes this choice is made because more appropriate medical supervision is required in cases of Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease.

MRM services and care can provide "everyday" comfort for operations such as getting around, washing, getting dressed, and visiting the little corner. It's great to be served well-balanced meals with a varied diet, not to mention the fact that household chores are no longer an obligation.

Finally, it's worth noting that this choice is also made in order to be closer to family and friends. This proximity will increase the number of visits from family and friends.

As you can see, the picture is not all bleak. Let's not forget that the primary mission of the MRMs is to care for and look after our elderly. Caregivers seek above all to ensure that their patients are as comfortable as possible, both physically and psychologically.

Everyone can make up their own mind.

See you soon.
